چکیده
A pervasive criticism of hypertext systems is that users tend to lose their way. Although much work has been done to address this "lost in hyperspace" problem, it still remains unresolved, even accepted as an inevtaible feature. But using the "lost in hyperspace" problem as an example of usability problems, we argue usabilityproblems are not user problems. Once viewed like this, more appropriate solutions are applied to address it. We argue that some usability problems have been mis-classified as "psychological" and therefore are only palliated rather than cured. However, we show that there is much scope for new systems approaches that avoid such problems, and which offer considerably more creative ways of going about design of interactive systems.

Addressing Design and Usability Issues in Hypertext and on the World Wide Web by Re-Examining the "Lost in Hyperspace" Problem
Users tend to lose their way in the maze of information within hypertext. Much work done to address the \lost in hyperspace" problem is reactive, that is, doing remedial work to correct the de ciencies within hypertexts because they are (or were) poorly designed and built. What if solutions are sought to avoid the problem? What if we do things well from the start? This paper reviews the \lost i...
متن کامل“Lost in hyperspace” problem revisited and framework for building digital libraries
Digital libraries are a fast-growing area, and current digital libraries are becoming more complex. From a pilot study conducted on three sample digital libraries, navigation within digital libraries is still not desirable. "Lost in hyperspace" is still a problem in digital libraries. This paper examines design objectives used by designers of these digital libraries, and analyses whether these ...
متن کاملAdaptation based on Psychological Factors using Fuzzy Logic
Hypermedia and multimedia capability of web supports the new constructivist way of active learning. However, it may lead to cognitive overload and resulting in `disorientation` or `lost in hyperspace` problem. To reduce this cognitive overload the content should be tailored to individual differences of users. Psychological factor is one of many factors that influence characteristics of individu...
متن کامل'Lost in hyperspace?' - A look at four viable approaches
Hypertext systems, structuring traditional text into non-sequential text, has provided us with a valuable mechanism and flexibility for non-linear reading and retrieval [Conklin 1987]. In hypertext, users not only benefit from the information they read but also from the richly, interconnected network of nodes and links present in hypertexts. Nodes are documents which can contain text, graphics,...
متن کاملNavigation Modeling in Hypermedia Applications
A distinguishing feature of hypermedia applications is the possibility of navigational access by the user. Although this type of access can be an advantage, there many problems associated with it, for example user disorientation ("lost in hyperspace"). This paper presents the concept of navigational context, which is used to design the navigation structure of a hypermedia application. Navigatio...
